Everything OK at Home?

I asked my 14-year-old son last night if he would be tempted to change his sexual orientation if he saw Chaz Bono performing on Dancing with the Stars. Who's Chaz Bono? he said. When I explained that this 42-year-old heavyset (now bearded) man was once an angelic little girl whom I used to watch on her famous parents' TV variety show, he shrugged it off.

To the American Family Association, onemillionmoms.com and others shaking sticks at DWTS for their casting choice and threatening a viewer boycott, I must ask, Is everything OK at home? What in the world are you worried about? That your son or daughter is going to suddenly announce that he/she is inspired by Chaz to jump genders? That your child is so insecure in his/her own identity that merely viewing a cross-gender adult on TV (whose gender history, BTW, is not emblazoned on his clothes or visible on his face) will condemn him/her to a life of confusion and sexual distress?

Come on people! Get a life! Aren't there enough other disasters in this country right now -- economic, political and natural -- which we would be better served to focus our energies and resources on? I would dare argue that it is downright unpatriotic to divert human and capital resources from the very real crises that presently imperil our country to one that should be above reproach as a guaranteed constitutional right.

Wrap your American flag around that.
